No Surprises Here

Here is a map measuring the US Peace Index.  Blue is peaceful, red is less peaceful or just plain abhorent. I think I've spotted a distinct pattern. Can you see it too?

The US is ranked 85 of 149 nations in the Global Peace Index.  We have moved up 11 spots over the past 3 years.  The most peaceful nations are New Zealand, Iceland and Japan.  The least peaceful are Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan.

Earthquake Explained by Scientific America

Here is an article from Scientific America that explains how the earthquake occurred in Japan in which the country was pushed west 8 feet and the earth's axis shifted by 6.5 inches.  The earths rotation has been sped up just enough to make the days 1.8 microseconds shorter.

Thank you Presurfer.

Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis

The Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) is a world-wide tsunami warning system. It is comprised of surface buoys that are anchored to BPR (Bottom Pressure Recording) devices.  These DART stations have been installed at locations around the world with a history of tsunami activity.

These stations, run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), are of particular interest right now due to the recent 8.9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan.

Presently there are 39 stations:

Pressure, temperature and estimated sea surface height readings are collected every 15 seconds.  On the map at this link you can click on each station and get live accurate readings.

I hope no other countries have to experience what Japan is going through right now.
