Have you ever wondered what they do with New York City subway cars when they are worn out? I have never wondered this but here is the answer. They are dumped into the ocean. Yay!
Photographer Stephen Mallon, documented the dumping of the worn-out in these eerie photos.
The cars, which had been scrubbed of hazardous materials at a cost of $8,000 per car, were disposed of in a specific area 21 miles off the Maryland coast. Officials hope that the subway cars dumped there create an artificial reef for fish. It's supposed to help bolster the sport-fishing industry in Maryland.
This seems like a long way to go to help recreational fisherman.
